Why Cavities Form
How a cavity gets started.
Bacteria in plaque feed on sugars from food and drink and produce acid as a by-product. That acid dissolves minerals out of the enamel, and once enough mineral is lost the surface breaks down into a cavity. Children are especially prone to it: baby teeth have thinner enamel than adult teeth, back teeth have deep grooves that trap food, and brushing technique is still developing. Frequent snacking and sipping matter more than the total amount of sugar — every exposure restarts the acid attack.
The Treatment

We use composite resin rather than metal amalgam, so the finished filling matches the surrounding tooth and no one can see it. The decayed portion is removed, the cavity is cleaned, and the composite is placed in layers and hardened with a curing light, then shaped and polished so the bite feels normal. Most fillings are complete in a single appointment. We explain each step to your child in plain language before we start, and use topical numbing gel before any freezing so the first sensation is not a surprise.

Before you leave we go through what is driving decay for your child specifically — brushing technique, flossing between contacting teeth, snack and drink habits, and whether sealants or fluoride varnish would help.
