Happy child at a preventive dental visit in Etobicoke

Preventive Care

Habits and checkups that last a lifetime.

The least expensive, least invasive dentistry is the treatment your child never needs — which is exactly what preventive care is for.

Every Six Months

What a preventive visit covers.

A recall appointment is short, but it does a lot of work.

  • A full oral exam — teeth, gums, bite, and soft tissues
  • Professional cleaning to remove plaque and hardened tartar
  • Digital X-rays when needed to see between and beneath teeth
  • Fluoride varnish to strengthen enamel
  • Sealants on newly erupted molars
  • A check on how permanent teeth are developing and erupting
  • Brushing and flossing coaching aimed at your child's age

Why Start Early

Small problems are cheap to fix.

Decay does not announce itself. By the time a tooth hurts, the damage usually needs a filling — sometimes a crown or an extraction. Caught at a recall visit, the same spot may only need fluoride and a change in habits. Early visits also do something less obvious but just as valuable: they let your child get used to the chair, the light, and the sounds while nothing uncomfortable is happening, which makes every future appointment easier. The Canadian Dental Association recommends a first visit by age one, or within six months of the first tooth.

At Home

What actually moves the needle between visits.

Most of a child's oral health is decided at home, not in our chair. Brush twice a day with a fluoride toothpaste — a rice-grain smear under age three, a pea-sized amount after — and supervise or do the brushing yourself until roughly age eight, when a child's dexterity catches up. Start flossing as soon as two teeth touch. Watch frequency more than quantity when it comes to sugar: a juice box sipped over an hour does more damage than the same juice drunk in five minutes. Water between meals, and nothing but water in a bottle at bedtime.

Book A Recall

A schedule built around your child.

Six months suits most children, but not all. Children with a history of decay, deep grooves in their molars, orthodontic appliances, or certain medical conditions often do better on a three or four month cycle. We set the interval after the first exam and revisit it as your child grows. Call our Etobicoke clinic to book a children's checkup — we see families seven days a week.
