Sealants & Fluoride

Sealants and fluoride that prevent decay.

Two quick, painless treatments that protect the teeth most likely to develop cavities — ideal for children and teens.

Dental Sealants

A thin shield over the grooves where cavities start.

The chewing surfaces of back teeth are covered in narrow pits and grooves that a toothbrush bristle cannot reach into. Food and bacteria settle there, and that is where most childhood cavities begin. A sealant is a thin resin coating painted onto those surfaces and hardened with a curing light — it seals the grooves so debris cannot collect. Application takes a few minutes per tooth, needs no freezing or drilling, and a well-placed sealant can last several years. We check them at every recall visit and top them up when needed.

Fluoride Treatments

Enamel that resists acid and repairs itself.

Fluoride works differently from a sealant: instead of covering the tooth, it is absorbed into the enamel, making it harder and more resistant to the acids that cause decay. It can also remineralize early white-spot lesions before they become cavities that need filling. We apply a professional-strength varnish or gel in under a minute at the end of a cleaning appointment — far stronger than what is in toothpaste, and safe when applied by a dental professional.

  • Applied at the end of a routine cleaning — no extra visit needed
  • Strengthens developing adult teeth as they erupt
  • Can reverse early decay before a filling is required
  • Recommended every six months for most children
  • Also useful for adults with dry mouth, recession, or braces

When To Start

Timing that matters.

Sealants are most valuable as soon as the first permanent molars come through, usually around age six, with a second round for the twelve-year molars. Fluoride starts earlier — we typically begin varnish applications once your child has several teeth in place. At each recall visit we check which teeth have erupted, decide what is worth protecting, and explain our recommendation before we do anything. Book a children's appointment at our Etobicoke clinic and we will map out the right schedule for your child.
