Space Maintainers
Holding the gap for the tooth to come.
When a baby tooth is lost too early, a small custom appliance keeps the space open so the permanent tooth has somewhere to go.

Why They Matter
Baby teeth are placeholders.
Every baby tooth is holding space for the permanent tooth developing underneath it. When one is lost early — through decay, an accident, or an extraction — the neighbouring teeth start drifting into the gap within months. By the time the adult tooth is ready to erupt there is no longer room for it, so it comes in crowded, rotated, or blocked out entirely. A space maintainer is a small, fixed appliance that stops that drift and preserves the opening until the permanent tooth arrives on its own schedule.
How It Works
Fitted in two short visits.
At the first visit we take an impression or digital scan of the area. The appliance — usually a stainless steel band cemented to the tooth next to the gap, with a wire loop spanning it — is made to fit your child exactly. At the second visit we cement it in place. There is no drilling and no freezing. Most children stop noticing it within a few days, and it stays in until the permanent tooth begins to push through, at which point we remove it in minutes.
Day To Day
Caring for a space maintainer.
They need very little attention, but a few habits keep the appliance where it belongs.
- Brush around the band and loop as normal, twice a day
- Avoid sticky sweets, toffee, and chewing gum
- Skip hard candy and ice — both can loosen the cement
- Never push or pull at the wire with fingers or tongue
- Call us right away if it feels loose or comes out
- Keep regular six-month checkups so we can monitor the fit
Does My Child Need One?
It depends on which tooth, and when.
Not every early tooth loss needs a maintainer. If the permanent tooth is already close to erupting, the gap will close naturally and no appliance is warranted. Back teeth lost well before their normal replacement age are the usual cases. We take an X-ray to see exactly how far along the permanent tooth is, then give you a straight answer either way. Book an appointment at our Etobicoke clinic if your child has lost a baby tooth earlier than expected.
